AKB48 is a Japanese collectible card game and collection product published by SK Japan, with the first volume released on August 10, 2012 under the subtitle I Missed You (Aitakatta). The game is based on the AKB48 idol group, one of Japan's largest and most commercially active pop acts, and features cards depicting members from AKB48 and affiliated groups including SKE48. The product integrated augmented reality functionality: each card carried an AR marker and a serial code that players could enter into a companion app operated by MTI Ltd., which would display a 3D image of the pictured idol through a smartphone camera. Gameplay involved building original team decks and competing against opponents. Each booster pack contained six cards, with the first volume comprising 203 distinct card types across normal and rare tiers. The combination of collectible idol photography cards with CCG mechanics and AR technology made the product distinctive among Japanese idol-merchandise releases of the early 2010s.
