Assobot Goku, formally titled Association Robot Goku, is a collectible card game released by Takara in Japan in April 2003, timed to accompany the anime television series of the same name. The anime, a 52-episode series animated by Egg and broadcast on TV Tokyo from October 2002 to September 2003, was adapted from a manga serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine from 2001 to 2002, written by Shin Kibayashi under the pen name Joji Arimori and illustrated by Romu Aoi. The story is set one thousand years in the future, where humans and assobots (a portmanteau of association and robot) are threatened by a plague called the Destruction Virus. The three main assobots are Goku, Tongo, and Joe. Takara was the franchise's toy partner, and the card game appears to have been produced as part of the broader merchandise line. Specific gameplay rules, card counts, and expansion information for the card game have not surfaced in surviving English or Japanese online sources.
